Travel Departure Preparation
- Carefully check travel papers to make sure they are valid and up-to-date. Passport, visa, I-20 form, and airline tickets should not be put in checked baggage--that could make it difficult to go through customs.
- Don’t carry too many unnecessary items, it is convenient to buy things in the U.S., and the quality is good.
- Maintain communication with the school, promptly inform them regarding flight information. This will allow the school to have enough time to prepare arrangements for picking up the student.
After arriving in the U.S., the student should try to adjust to jet-lag, adapt to the schedule, and whole-heartedly dive into the English immersion educational opportunities.
At Host Home, or Dormitory;
- Do not isolate yourself in your bedroom; take the initiative to go out of the bedroom, interact with the household or classmates.
- Do not use the internet in your bedroom, instead take the initiative to use it in a visible common space.
- Do not get absorbed in online games. Take the initiative to sit down and together with your host family or classmates watch English TV or have a conversation.
- Do not rely on reading Chinese internet sites. Force yourself to get into a habit of reading English websites.
- Do not be afraid ask the Americans for help, your host family has taken you in and lovingly wants to help you.
- Do not ask people to do things without asking ahead of time, because Americans handle matters by preparing ahead of time.
- Do not look at American society from a Chinese perspective; there is not income disparity between rural and urban areas.
- Do not use materialistic money standards to judge people, because the emphasis is on personal freedom, not making heroes of those with money.
10. Do not freely download intellectual property, such as music, games and other information—in order to avoid liability.
11. Do not stir/deep fry in the house, Americans aren’t used to having the house fill with a Chinese food oil aroma.
12. Do not cut in line or speak loudly in public places. Learn to speak with people in a slow and soft voice.
At School:
- Don’t be late to class, if you make an appointment with a teacher or classmate—keep the appointment.
- In the Lutheran education system, arriving late is equivalent to stealing other people’s time.
- In addition to required courses, you should be actively involved in supporting school activities, seize every opportunity to improve yourself.
- Familiarize yourself with the school’s grading system, because if you are late to class, don’t hand in homework on time, don’t actively participate in group activities, or don’t take a test honestly—these all will have impact on your GPA.
- If you cheat on a test, you will definitely lose course credit, or be expelled.
- Learn each day’s course material in a timely manner, this will make you more relaxed later. (i.e. don’t cram)
- Take the initiative to make use of the many educational resources offered by the school: checking grades online, course selection guidance, career direction guidance, psychological counseling, and the relationship with the teacher(s).
- Develop a habit of communicating with your parents, persist in talking with them one to two times per week.
- Don’t hide your study and living situation from your parents, give an honest account or your learning situation and feelings.
- Parents should also note, don’t require your child to call or video-chat every day, it is important to give your child space to grow independent.
- Regardless of whether you come across an unsatisfactory issue at school or at your residence, definitely don’t grumble, but you can expediently communicate with the church pastor or school teacher.
